5 Ways to Help Your Child's Handwriting at Home

Dr. Garima TyagiAugust 20, 20255 min read

Messy handwriting is one of the most common concerns parents raise β€” and the good news is that lots of playful activities can help, no worksheets required.

1. Build hand strength with play: squeezing playdough, using tweezers to pick up beads, and popping bubble wrap all strengthen the small muscles used for writing.

2. Try vertical surfaces: colouring on paper taped to a wall or easel builds wrist stability and a good grip.

3. Focus on posture: feet flat, table at elbow height and paper slightly tilted make writing far easier.

4. Practise pre-writing shapes: lines, circles and zig-zags in sand, shaving foam or finger paint build control before letters.

5. Keep it short and fun: a few minutes of playful practice beats long, frustrating sessions. If handwriting remains a struggle, an occupational therapy assessment can help pinpoint why.
